Habit – perennial herb, shrubby  below. Branches – hispidly villous or tomentose. Stem – 30 to 90 cm long fleshy. Leaves – 2.5 to 5 cm long, petioled. Broadly ovate or cordate, crenate, fleshy and aromatic. Flowers – purplish coloured with short tube.

Benefits :

It should be used in aruchi, agnimandya, ajeerna, vishtambha, diseases of liver, udarashoola,atisara,grahani, vishuchika and in krimis by its ruchikara,deepaniya,pachaniya,vatanulomak,yakritottejak,grahi and krimighna in gunas.

Parnayavani juice is very effective for the treatment of vishuchika. It should be given in a dose of 12 ml. stat followed by 6 ml every hour for two doses. If no relief is obtained it should be repeated after 8 hours in the same manner.

Swasa (Difficulty in breathing)

Parnayavani (Coleus amboinicus) leaves juice is given with honey in case of Swasa (Difficulty in breathing).

Udarasula (Pain abdomen)

parnayavani (Coleus amboinicus) leaves juice  with sugar is given  in case of Udarasula (Pain abdomen).

A study is done to investigate protective effect of Coleus aromaticus leaf extract against naphthalene induced hepaleusaromaticus leaf extract against naphthalene induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Significant protective effect was observed against naphthalene induced liver damage damaged, which appeared evident from the response levels of marker enzymes (aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase).

General Information :

Skin problems, boils, eczema, daadkhaj, psoriasis Prepare decoction of Pitta papra and neem leaves. Drink regularly for few days. Prepare homemade oil by cooking this herb in mustard oil and apply at affected areas. Kidney problem, Increased Serum creatine and urea Drink decoction of Pitta papra. General Information

Habit – A tall tree grwosupto 100 ft. in height. Trunk – Straight, about 50 cm I circumference, uniformly thick. Leaves – Large, upto 7ft. long with numerous leaflets which are 30 to 60 cm long, Spadix much branched, bearing male and female flowers. Male flowers are numerous, sessile and without bracts. Female flowers are solitary or 2 or 3 at or near the base each ramification of the spadix, sessile and without bracts. Fruit – Orange coloured when ripens, 4 to 5 cm in diameter, having smooth surface.

Benefits :

It isruchikara, mukhavaishadyakara, lalasravakara, deepaka and mukhadurgandhiharahence it is used aruchi, mukhaliptata, much durgandhi and agnimandya.

It is stambhana and krimighna in nature hence it should be used, in atisara, pravahika and krimi. Acts as krimighna due to ericholine contained in it.Active against tape and round worms.

In shukrameha and shvetapradara being shukrastambhana and garbhashayashothahara and also in bahumootrata.

Uttarbasti of pug decoction is used to treat condition of leucorrhea.

Sesame oil processed with areca nut is used for external application over joints affected with pain and inflammation.

Supari powder is mixed with lime juice is given to treat anorexia and nausea.Dose-1-2gm

Application of Pug powder gives good result in wounds and ulcersMouth disease likestomatities, throat infections should be treated with the decoction of nut.The decoction is used for gargling.

Dusting of supari is done for quick wound healing. Being an astringent, it absorbs slough and wound liquids.

Pugphala siddha jala is used in dysuria.

In cough, betel nut chewed along with leaves of betel climber.

Pug powder siddha milk brings back ability to sexual pleasure.Dose-1gm

In Vatavyadhi, shalaki along with supari kwatha mixed with oil and given to drink.

In Upadamsha, supari is rubbed and crushed and lepa done.

Research Corner :

A study was designed to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of A. catechu L. nut (ANE) treatment on migraine pain in rat models to strengthen its use as an antimigraine therapy. The PPE was reduced in both ANE treated groups  of rats. The percent fluorescein was significantly increased in positive control group (97.00+7%, P<0.0001) compared to negative control (63.87+1.2%). With ANE treatments (250 and 500 mg/kg.) PPE was significantly decreased to 88.88+1.4% (p<0.01) and 83.55+01%(p<0.0001) compared to positive control groups, respectively .

The Truth About GrivaBasti Therapy

Quite similar to the katibasti the procedure of applying heat to the cervical region by retaining warm medicated oil with in a specially formed frame on this area is known by the name Grivabasti. This basti is indicated in painful conditions of the cervical region like cervical spondylosis, spondylolisthesis, disc prolapse, ankylosing-pond it is, rheumatoid arthritis etc. The prescription of medicated oil for the therapy is similar to the katibasti.

To carry out the procedure of grivabasti the client is made to sit on a knee high stool, with his arm and head resting on a chest high table kept in front of him. In this position the trunk is slightly bent forwards, the neck is flexed and the forehead is resting on the table. This position of the client is most ideal for the grivabasti as the cervical region remains almost horizontal GrivaBasti Therapy.

A frame of black gram paste is made around the painful cervical region. The junction between the frame and skin is sealed to make it leak proof. Warm medicated oil is poured into this frame. This warm oil heats the affected area inducing perspiration. This is followed by massage and fomentation to this part of the body. This is the procedure of grivabasti and is similar to the procedure of katibasti.

The phrase GrivaBasti  is  from Sanskrit. The word Griva refers to neck and Basti stands for container or  retaining something inside. It is an Ayurvedic neck care and basically a hot oil therapy. GrivaBasti  is bathing the neck region with medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. 

This Ayurvedic PanchakarmaTherapy includes bathing the back of the neck using warm medicated oil or herbal decoction for 20 to 30 minutes.

Uro Basti is also called as ‘Hridaya Basti’. Takra Dhara Ayurvedic Treatment

Takradhara is similar to shirodhara treatment. This therapy means – takra means buttermilk; dhara means pouring.

Takradhara therapy is used to cure diseases caused by the excess of Vata Dosha which is  best ayurvedic therapy

At first a person is prepared for Takradhara therapy. A complete body massage is given to a person using herbal oils and ghee. This lubricates the body, open up pours and loosen up the toxin.
